The-Purge-Election-Year

You could be forgiven for thinking this was a campaign video from political hate-monger Donald Trump, but it’s actually the first trailer for The Purge: Election Year. The third entry in the hit franchise takes place a couple of years after the events of Anarchy with America’s annual tradition taking an even darker turn.

The Purge is a cut above the usual offerings from micro-budget master Jason Blum, while I have enjoyed many of his movies in the past, The Purge series has a surprising amount of social reflection and paint a grim picture of a possible future. Once a year all crime in America is made legal and for 12 hours the streets run riot with chaos. Despite previous reports that the third movie would be a prequel, Election Year is very much a sequel and will see Frank Grillo’s Sergeant return for a second round.

The story focuses on US Senator Charlene Roan (Elizabeth Mitchell) who lost her whole family at the hands of Purgers years ago. Roan’s bid for The White House has been built on the pledge that she will bring an end to the annual Purge. Naturally, her stance on the Purge has ruffled some feathers with the rich and powerful conspiring to have her killed during the forthcoming Purge. Thankfully, she crosses paths with Sergeant, who will stop at nothing to protect her and see an end to the Purge once and for all.

Part of the appeal of The Purge was that the first two movies were separate from each other, aside from a couple of minor characters you could call it an anthology franchise which is something rather unique these days. While I have no objections to seeing Sergeant back in action, I can’t help but feel that another standalone story would have been a better way to go.

The Purge: Election Year is released in the UK this summer.
