The third trailer for Pirates of the Caribbean 5 has arrived, and Captain Jack Sparrow finally gets some screen time. The previous trailers have focused more on Javier Bardem’s villainous Captain Armando Salazar than Old Jack Sparrow. In part, Johnny Depp’s public image has suffered in recent years, and he hasn’t exactly been enjoying much luck at the box office.
I will still maintain that the first Pirates movie was fun (albeit highly repetitive), but none of the existing sequels came close to retaining what worked so well for the maiden voyage in this franchise. The trailer for Dead Men Tell No Tales informs us that this is the beginning of the “final adventure” for Jack Sparrow. On the surface, this seems like a needless marketing ploy to get bums on seats (just like Expendables and Fast and Furious), but if this belated sequel makes serious money you can bet we’ll see Sparrow again.
We’ve only glimpsed the return of Orlando Bloom as Will Turner in the previous trailer, but he’s in the mix alongside Geoffrey Rush, Stephen Graham, Kevin McNally and Brenton Thwaites.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (or Salazar’s Revenge if you live outside the US) sails into cinemas on May 26th, check out the trailer below.
Thrust into an all-new adventure, a down-on-his-luck Captain Jack Sparrow finds the winds of ill-fortune blowing even more strongly when deadly ghost pirates led by his old nemesis, the terrifying Captain Salazar (Bardem), escape from the Devil’s Triangle, determined to kill every pirate at sea…including him. Captain Jack’s only hope of survival lies in seeking out the legendary Trident of Poseidon, a powerful artifact that bestows upon its possessor total control over the seas.
