Geostorm Trailer 2 Is Even More Insane Than The First

The new trailer for the long-delayed Geostorm has arrived, but has it been worth the wait?

Back in my misspent youth, a big budget disaster movie was something to get excited over as it offered big dumb fun on a massive scale. The ensemble cast (usually populated by non-blockbuster types), the epic destruction, and the clunky dialogue was a fine art to get right. My love of the disaster movie was born out of watching the likes of The Towering Inferno, The Poseidon Adventure, Airport 77 and it’s many sequels on a lazy Sunday afternoon with my Dad.

In the last ten years, the old-fashioned disaster movie has been dying out, and even Independence Day director Roland Emmerich’s attempts with 2012, and The Day After Tomorrow have failed to retain the winning formula of the classic disaster movie. Well, another Independence Day alum is having another go with Dean Devlin’s Geostorm finally ready for release.

Filmed back in 2014, Devlin assembled a cast that included Gerard Butler, Abbie Cornish, Alexandra Lara, Jim Sturgess, Amr Waked, Ed Harris, and Andy García. Wrapping production early 2015, Geostorm was originally due out later that year, but woeful test screenings forced the producers to bankroll expensive reshoots. Devlin didn’t return for the reshoots, Judge Dredd director Danny Cannon was brought in to complete the film with Jerry Bruckheimer tasked to oversee the process. Two years on from the reshoots and the movie is just a few months away from gatecrashing cinemas.

For all the talent that went into making Geostorm, the end results look like a straight-faced spoof of the genre and could be gloriously awful. I’m not too proud to admit I like a good shit movie from time to time, Uwe Bowl’s In The Name of the King is garbage, but I love it for its sheer ridiculousness. Could Geostorm be one of those rare movies that are so bad they swing all the way back around to being good? Or, will it end up another The Core and be instantly forgotten? Only time will tell.
