Not to be confused with the 1976 sequel to Westworld, James Franco stars, co-directs, and goes Nicolas Cage levels of scenery chewing in post-apocalyptic thriller Future World.
Here’s the official synopsis to explain what’s going on because I haven’t got a ruddy clue.
Inside a desert oasis, a queen (Lucy Liu) lays dying as her son Prince (Jeffrey Wahlberg) travels across barren wastelands to find a near-mythical medicine to save her life. After evading violent raiders on motorbikes led by the Warlord (James Franco) and his enforcer (Cliff “Method Man” Smith), Prince meets Ash (Suki Waterhouse), the Warlord’s robot sex companion-assassin who’s in search of her own soul. As Prince is captured by the Druglord (Milla Jovovich), the Warlord’s forces roar in – and Prince fights to save the remnants of humanity.
Robot sex companion-assassins, wastelands, unstable analogies, Snoop Dogg, a lot is going on in this Future World trailer, and practically none of it lands. Perhaps it’s a knowingly over the top satire of the post-apocalyptic genre? Was it made as part of some elaborate prank or a dare? Either way, Future World is a film that has happened and will be released in selected cinemas in the US on May 25, there is currently no fixed date for the UK.
The Disaster Artist and HBO’s The Deuce are career bests from Franco, so Future World does seem like an odd choice on the surface, but the movie was shot back in 2016. The first trailer kind of looks like Franco watched Mad Max Fury Road a bunch of times and fancied making a fan movie. Future World is one of at least half a dozen completed directing projects for Franco slated for release over the next 18 months.
