Avengers Infinity War Racing Towards $1 Billion

box office

Not content with breaking every box office record going, Avengers Infinity War is set to become the fastest movie to gross $1 billion worldwide.

At the time of writing, Infinity War has been on release for eight days (taking into account the early UK release) and in that time has generated more than $850 million. This gives Infinity War three days to beat the previous record holder, Star Wars The Force Awakens, which achieved that feat in just twelve days. The Avengers tussle with Thanos is set for a $120 million-plus second weekend, so it’s safe to assume that Infinity War will hit $1 billion worldwide before the end of the weekend.

Back in 2012, The Avengers crossed $1 billion after nineteen days, a year later Iron Man 3 managed it in twenty-three days, and 2015′ Age of Ultron joined the club in twenty-four days. In case you wondered, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, Furious 7, Avatar, The Last Jedi, and Fast and Furious 8 all hit $1 billion after nineteen days, and Jurassic World did it in just fifteen. In case you didn’t wonder, I’m sorry I wasted your time.

Despite opening bigger than The Force Awakens in the US, Infinity War is more than $40 million behind Star Wars after six days in cinemas. The real test will be in the next two weeks to see if Infinity War has the legs to go the distance, but at this stage, Avengers 3 looks like it will join Avatar and The Force Awakens in the $2 billion club.

There isn’t much in the way of competition over the next couple of weeks, Deadpool 2 will take some screens from Infinity War on May 18. Before that happens, Infinity War has a clear run to break even more box office records.
