do-not-reuse-pic-promotional-poster-for-real-steel-image-2-353374626Not even the might of two 80’s remakes could topple Real Steel at the US box office. It was a close one as Footloose came within $250 K of knocking the Rock em sock Robots from the top spot.

It was a less than impressive second week for the Hugh Jackman movie, but modest word of mouth has helped keep it as this weekend’s champ.

Footloose put up a brave fight and danced it’s way to second place. Fellow remake of an iconic 80’s movie The Thing didn’t do as well.

Now it is rated R (15 or 18 over here) and it’s showing on less screens than the kiddie friendly Footloose. I’m not coming up with excuses (honest) just it’s worth making a note of.

The rest of the US top 5 looks like this.

1. Real Steel $16.3 million
2. Footloose $16.1 million
3. The Thing $8.7 million
4. Ides of March $7.5 million
5. Dolphin Tale $6.3 million

Meanwhile the UK Top 5 tells a different story.

1. Johnny English Reborn £4.9 million

2. The Lion King (in 3D) £2.7 million

3. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy £1.07 million

4.  Abduction £513 k

5. Don’t Be Afraid Of The Dark £496 k

Tinker Tailor Solider Spy has now made over £11 million at the UK box office, a huge achievement for the movie which should easily reach £15 million before it finishes in cinemas.
