WHY HIM

Breaking dad’s heart.

Bryan Cranston and James Franco are at odds with each other in the first trailer for R-rated comedy Why Him? Cranston stars as a straight-laced dad who is less than impressed that his daughter (Zoey Deutch) is dating an obnoxious internet billionaire (Franco). Naturally, Papa Cranston does everything he can to split them up, but he’s underestimated his daughter’s new boyfriend and it doesn’t take long before things get out of hand.

To an entire generation, Cranston is best known as meth kingpin Walter White in the excellent Breaking Bad, but it was his performance as strung out Hal in Malcolm in the Middle that introduced me to the powerhouse of Cranston. The plot of ‘disapproving dad’ is fairly generic and has produced some diabolically bad comedies over the years, but the success of failure of the movie will rest on the likeable shoulders of the two leads. Directed by John Hamburg (I Love You, Man), the first trailer raises a few chuckles and is very NSFW. Also starring Megan Mullally, Keegan-Michael Key, Andrew Rannells, Casey Wilson, and Adam DeVine, Why Him? arrives in UK cinemas early next year.

Over the holidays, Ned (Bryan Cranston), an overprotective but loving dad and his family visit his daughter at Stanford, where he meets his biggest nightmare: her well-meaning but socially awkward Silicon Valley billionaire boyfriend, Laird (James Franco). The straight-laced Ned thinks Laird, who has absolutely no filter, is a wildly inappropriate match for his daughter. The one-sided rivalry-and Ned’s panic level-escalate when he finds himself increasingly out of step in the glamorous high-tech hub, and learns that Laird is about to pop the question.
