Don’t Expect Cabin In The Woods 2 Says Drew Goddard

Cabin-in-the-Woods-2

After sitting on the shelf thanks to MGM financial issues, The Cabin In The Woods finally saw the light of day and turned over a respectable $70 million at the box office. Add to that some robust DVD/Blu-ray sales, and you have all the makings of a bonafide hit.

In a recent interview with Cinemablend, co-writer and director Drew Goddard revealed that the studio are keen to make a sequel, and he has discussed possible ideas with Joss Whedon. However, before you get too excited, Goddard doesn’t appear too enthusiastic about a Cabin in the Woods 2.

“I think we just don’t want to, we don’t want to fuck it up. I mean, I think, I’ve always felt this way. Not everything needs to be a franchise. You know, like we only want to make it if we’re excited about it. I don’t care; I don’t think we need to do it. It’s more about, is there something that excites us? You know, that universe is pretty exciting, so we talk about it from time to time. I don’t know. If I had to put odds, the tricky part with Joss and I, especially, is it all depends on how we wake up in the morning. If we wake up I can easily see us over drinks tomorrow going like, ‘Hey, what if we did this?’ But I can also see us being like, ‘The movie is pretty good. We don’t need to revisit it.’

You can’t argue with Goddard’s points, why should every vaguely successful movie be turned into a franchise? While that’s how Hollywood works these days, the endless cycle of sequels, prequels, adaptations and reboots has reduced the number of original movies drastically. Wouldn’t you rather see Goddard and Whedon forge new ideas and move on to something else? At any rate a sequel would be hard work creatively speaking, the ending of the movie pretty much signified the end of the world as we know it.
