Rocky IV Honest Trailer

Those folks at Screen Junkies have turned their attention to Rocky IV for their latest Honest Trailer.

Before Creed II brings Adonis Creed (Michael B. Jordan) and Viktor Drago (Florian Munteanu) into the ring for an explosive grudge match, why not remind yourself of what led the next generation of Creed and Drago into the ring.

For a movie that has a lean 91-minute running time, Rocky IV is more music video/training montage with a fight at the end than a motion picture. Recently, one brave soul timed the montages of Rocky IV revealing that over a third of the running time is a montage.

TOTAL MONTAGE TIME: 29 minutes and 10 seconds
TOTAL MOVIE RUNNING TIME: 91 minutes and 20 seconds
PERCENTAGE OF ROCKY IV THAT IS MONTAGE: 31.9%

As bad as Rocky IV might be on a plethora of levels, the soundtrack is golden. Sure, there’s a robot servant at Balboa Manor, there are a solid ten minutes of recycled footage, training montages featuring recycled footage and awesome power rock. The once realistic boxing matches of the first two films have long since gone, and the whole thing feels like a music video. Rocky IV is confusing, thrilling, yet by all accounts, it shouldn’t be watchable, let alone rewatchable 33 years later. For all its many sins, I still like Rocky IV. I know I shouldn’t, but as I said, that soundtrack is freaking golden.

Creed II arrives in cinemas November 30.

In 1985, the Soviet boxer Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren) killed former heavyweight boxing champion Apollo Creed during an exhibition fight in Las Vegas. That same year, Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) defeated Ivan Drago in a boxing match on Christmas Day in the Soviet Union. Thirty-three years later, Apollo Creed’s son Adonis (Michael B. Jordan), with Rocky’s training and guidance, seeks to avenge his father’s death by fighting Drago’s son Viktor (Florian Munteanu) while at the same time, Ivan hopes to reclaim his honour through Viktor.
