Bruce Willis Talks Die Hard Prequel

Apparently, it’s a good day for a Die Hard origin story.

The recent news of a Die Hard prequel hasn’t had a glowing endorsement from most corners of the internet, but Bruce Willis thinks it’s a great idea and can’t wait to get started. Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, Willis confirmed that Die Hard 6 will be an origin story.

“It’s a very good idea, a really tricky idea, and I’m very happy about it. It’s a really cool idea, because it’s the origin story. It’s going to happen at the beginning of this. We’re going to bounce back and forth.”

Without wishing to sound complacent to Mr. Willis’ comments, how much more McClane backstory do we need to understand his character any better? The original movie did a pretty good job giving us all we need to know about John McClane. He’s a New York Cop with a marriage on the rocks; he adores his children, and he isn’t afraid to break the rules to get the job done. Are we going to see him woo the future ex-Mrs Holly McClane?

Back in 1988 Die Hard changed the action genre forever and made a movie star out that funny bloke from Moonlighting. Die Hard 2 wasn’t great, but was a serviceable sequel. Third time lucky for Die Hard With A Vengeance and the uncut 4.0 is way better than the hacked up theatrical cut. I’m just going to go ahead and say Yippee Ki Yay Father Snowflake to A Good Day To Fuck Up A Franchise Even More Than It Was. A robotic performance from autopilot Willis paired with charisma vacuum Jai Courtney made for a depressingly dull double act.

After the utter contempt shown for John McClane (and gravity) in A Good Day To Die Hard, I think I’m done with this franchise once and for all. When I say done, naturally I mean I will follow the development of the movie like a ninja and begrudgingly go and see it when it comes out with the intention of writing a scornful review. These are the desperate acts Hollywood forces us into when it messes with the things we love for the sake of a few quid. I guess that’s the added burden of being a thirty-something, eventually everything you loved as a kid gets reboots and sold back to you.

On the other hand, Star Wars The Force Awakens looks spectacular, and the final trailer was a joy to behold.
