Critters TV Series Launches This Month

More than 25 years since we saw them last, those pesky Critters are back only this time they’re a TV series. Launching back in 1986, Critters might have been riffing heavily on the success of Gremlins, but that didn’t stop it from becoming a cult favourite.

The original saw a crashed space shot full of these little Critters crash land in a small farming town on Earth causing merry hell for the residents. They are pursed by intergalactic bounty hunters who band together with some locals to save the world from these fuzzy monsters. Directed by Stephen Herek (Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure), it is worth noting that the script was written before Gremlins was released, but that’s not exactly relevant 30 years on.

Three sequels that included giving Leonardo DiCaprio an early acting gig, and taking the franchise to outer space, a reboot has been on the cards for more than a decade. After several false starts with a movie revamp, a TV series seems like a good fit for the Critters. In addition to the teaser above, the official synopsis for the series has also been released.

Pursued by intergalactic bounty hunters, the Critters return to Earth on a secret mission and encounter lovelorn high-schooler Christopher (Joey Morgan, Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse), his crush Dana (Stephi Chin-Salvo, iZOMBIE), his best friend Charlie (Bzhaun Rhoden, Van Helsing), and his mom Veronica (Kirsten Robek, The Edge of Seventeen), whose past will come back to bite them — literally. The series also features Gilbert Gottfried (Aladdin, Justice League Action) and Thomas Lennon (Reno 911!, Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich).

The key take home from this is that Gilbert Gottfried is guest starring in the series, read into that what you may. The Critters series will be exclusively available on Shudder in the US on March 21, it remains unclear when and where the series will land in the UK.
