Lethal Weapon, Rocky Horror and Exorcist TV Show Trailers Arrive

Lethal Weapon TV Series

It’s a sure sign that you’re getting too old for this shit when the stuff you grew up watching are being remade, but it’s a special kind of torment for a film geek to see beloved movies turned into slightly dodgy looking TV shows.

The science of transforming a classic movie into a TV series isn’t an exact one, for every Fargo there’s a Rush Hour and for every Hannibal there’s a Minority Report. The current croup of TV shows based on movies doesn’t hold much hope for the future with the arrival of trailers for Lethal Weapon, The Exorcist and a TV movie remake of The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

First up, Richard Donner’s Lethal Weapon is a classic action movie by anybody’s standards  and is in no need of any kind of remaking, but the powers that be decided that the violent antics of Riggs and Murtaugh should be diluted to become a family-friendly network TV show. Why?

Two sequels and two mangled prequels have already befouled The Exorcist and now it has a TV series reboot to add to its list of sins. Rise of the Planet of the Apes director Rupert Wyatt helmed the pilot pilot and Geena Davis heads up the cast. It is always good to see Geena Davis on our screens, but the first trailer suggests a by the numbers horror plot dragged out over many, many episodes. That might be a tad harsh as of the three trailers The Exorcist hold the most promise, which may sound like like high praise, but I assure you it isn’t.

Finally, The Rocky Horror Picture Show wasn’t exactly crying out for a remake, but that is exactly what Fox has done. A few years ago (when it was acceptable to like it), Glee did a Rocky Horror themed episode and it might have been a shade tacky, but it was only 43 minutes long. Needless to say, expectations are pretty low for this batch of Fox offerings and I would be surprised if Lethal Weapon was embraced by fans of the movies.
