Glow Returns To Netflix August 9

The third season of Glow has set its worldwide release date and the Glamorous Ladies of Wrestling will return to Netflix on August 9. Unfairly given little marketing push from Netflix, Glow is one of the best originals on offer, and I hope season three isn’t the end.

Based on the popular (albeit short-lived) wrestling show from the neon-laced 80s, Glow tells the tale of struggling actress Ruth Wilder (Alison Brie) who grabs hold (by the neck) of one last stab at fame, by becoming a wrestler. Thrust together with a band of misfits; Ruth has to contend with working with (and against) her former friend/soap star Debbie (Betty Gilpin). Held together by washed-up B-movie filmmaker Sam Sylvia (Marc Maron), it’s an underdog story we already know doesn’t have a fairytale ending, but it is impossible not to root for them.

When we last saw them, the ladies were heading off to Las Vegas to headline a show in a Casino following the cancellation of the series. A lot has changed on Netflix in the last twelve months, shows are being cancelled, and the streaming site if paying attention to the first month of views. In fact, the first month for a Netflix original will determine if it comes back for more episodes. Gone are the days when Netflix would hand out multi-season deals, while it was always an unsustainable model, some of the cancellations make no sense. Now that we are spoilt for choice when it comes to entertainment, TV shows that don’t show promise out of the gate are likely to be axed much sooner than they would if they were on Network TV.

What I’m trying to say is if you love Glow, binge watch it in that first month if you want to do your bit to help make season four a reality. That said, maybe season three is the natural end for the series and the writers have developed it as such. That said, watch it in the first month anyway, it’s a great show!

Glow season three lands on Netflix August 9.
