Netflix Was Planning To Surprise Release The Punisher This Month

Following the shocking events of Sunday night in Las Vegas, Marvel and Netflix decided to cancel their planned panel at New York Comic-Con for The Punisher as a mark of respect for the victims of the mass shooting.

“We are stunned and saddened by this week’s senseless act in Las Vegas. After careful consideration, Netflix and Marvel have decided it wouldn’t be appropriate for Marvel’s The Punisher to participate in New York Comic-Con. Our thoughts continue to be with the victims and those affected by this tragedy.”

According to Slash Film, Netflix was planning to surprise release The Punisher series as early as October 13, but those plans have also been put on hold in the wake of Sunday’s events. New York Comic-Con also issued a brief statement that fully supported the decision to cancel the panel.

“New York Comic Con wholeheartedly supports Netflix & Marvel’s decision to cancel Saturday’s The Punisher panel. NYCC takes great pride in offering fans the best in pop culture programming and we are working tirelessly to fill that time spot at The Theater at Madison Square Garden. We will continue to update fans via our social channels throughout the weekend.”

I think it goes without say that Netflix/Marvel have made the right decision to delay the release and withdraw from Comic-Con.

Meanwhile, Jessica Jones’ second season is currently in production as is the second run of Luke Cage that unfortunately sees Danny Rand (aka The Immortal Iron Fist aka The Boring One) team up with The Hero of Harlem. There’s no word yet on when The Punisher will be released, but it is still expected to launch this year. Jessica Jones and Luke Cage will land on Netflix sometime next year.

Starring Jon Bernthal, Ben Barnes, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Amber Rose Revah, Daniel Webber, and Deborah Ann Woll, we’ll keep you posted on all the latest Punisher developments.
