Everything Wrong With Kingsman: The Golden Circle

Cinema Sins once again proves that no movie is without sin and takes aim at Matthew Vaughn’s Kingsman: The Golden Circle.

I thoroughly enjoyed the first Kingsman movie, sure it’s not perfect, but it was more fun than the entirety of Daniel Craig’s time as James Bond. Kingsman didn’t take itself that seriously, it made great use of Colin Firth as a genuine action hero, and wasn’t afraid to be profoundly silly.

Making a very respectable $414 million at the worldwide box office, it was hardly a surprise when a follow-up was quickly ordered. The fast-tracked sequel hit cinemas back in September. I would love to say that The Golden Circle was a creative win, but it’s a hot mess of a sequel with so many ideas thrown at the screen huge chunks cease to make sense. For me, the movie was at least half an hour too long (it clocked in at 142 minutes), and it didn’t push the franchise forward in any meaningful way.

Despite the mixed reviews, The Golden Circle still generated more than $400 million worldwide against an estimated production budget of $104 million. Costing around $20 million more than the first film, The Golden Circle is well into profit so don’t be too surprised when Kingsman 3 is announced. Should a third movie happen, I hope that Vaughn and co-writer Jane Goldman can dial the spectacle down a notch, and get back to what made the first film feel fresh.
