Evil Dead Rise Trailer

Since Warner Bros merged with Discovery, there has been no end to the upheaval with movies being shelved, delayed, cancelled, recast, or buried in a vault. However, one good thing to come out of all this was the decision to shift Evil Dead Rise from being an HBO Max original to a full-blown theatrically released film.

Produced by Evil Dead veteran Rob Tapert and executive produced by Sam Raimi and the man, the myth, the legend that continues to be Bruce Campbell, the new movie is keeping the creative connection to the original alive and well. Directed by Lee Cronin (his debut, The Hole in the Ground, is well worth checking out), Evil Dead Rise moves the action out of the woods and into the city for a twisted tale of two estranged sisters, whose reunion is cut short by the rise of flesh-possessing demons, thrusting them into a primal battle for survival as they face the most nightmarish version of family imaginable.

While the trailer does appear absent of any of the trademark humour from Raimi’s trilogy or the sorely missed Ash vs Evil Dead, there are more than enough Evil Dead elements on display here. I wasn’t a massive fan of the 2013 remake from director Fede Álvarez, there were plenty of brutal horrors, and it was truly a fresh take on the beloved franchise. Yet it felt like too many other gore-soaked horrors that spend 95 minutes torturing its cast. Hopefully, Evil Dead Rise will live up to its impressive trailer, which is one of the creepiest trailers I’ve seen in a long time.

Evil Dead Rise lands in cinemas on April 21st, check out the Green Band and Red Band trailer below.
