The First Purge Unleashes Debut Trailer

Serving as a prequel to the 2013 original film, The First Purge does exactly as the title suggests and charts the events of the very first annual crime-athon. For one night a year, all crime is legal (and encouraged) across America in a desperate bid to reduce the sprawling crime rate.

Produced by horror maestro Jason Blum, the Purge franchise has generated more than $319 million across three movies on a combined production budget of $22 million (before marketing, naturally). While they might not make The Conjuring sized box office hauls, The Purge is still a solid money maker and shows no signs of slowing down.

The Purge mastermind James DeMonaco has handed directing duties over to Burning Sands filmmaker Gerard McMurray. DeMonaco remains involved as a producer and writer, but owing to his commitments to a new TV show, he was unable to direct his fourth Purge. The aforementioned TV show is none other than a Purge series, which DeMonaco is currently busy working on the pilot episode. The TV series is set to launch later this year with a ten-episode first season and has promised to take us deeper into the history and future of the murderous annual event.

Starring Y’Lan Noel, Lex Scott Davis, Joivan Wade, Luna Lauren Velez, and Marisa Tomei, The First Purge is released in the UK on July 6.

Behind every tradition lies a revolution. Next Independence Day, witness the rise of our country’s 12 hours of annual lawlessness. Welcome to the movement that began as a simple experiment: The First Purge. To push the crime rate below one percent for the rest of the year, the New Founding Fathers of America (NFFA) test a sociological theory that vents aggression for one night in one isolated community. But when the violence of oppressors meets the rage of the marginalised, the contagion will explode from the trial-city borders and spread across the nation.
