Created by Natasha Lyonne, Leslye Headland, and Amy Poehler, Netflix’s Russian Doll was released to little fanfare earlier this year, but became a success thanks to strong word of mouth and positive reviews. Having debuted its eight-episode first season back in February, Netflix has finally revealed that the series will be returning for a second run.
Starring Natasha Lyonne as Nadia Vulvokov, Russian Doll follows Nadia as she attempts to escape her neverending birthday party which she finds herself returning to every time she dies. I’ll keep details on its frequently unpredictable plot under wraps, but its clever spin on the Groundhog Day-style time loop is wildly inventive. I very rarely binge an entire series of anything in one sitting any more, but at eight half-hour episodes, and a great concept, the series demanded that I watched it all as one long movie. I fully endorse binge watching Russian Doll.
Without wishing to sound negative as I loved the series, season one felt like a near-perfect one-off. That said, Russian Doll was pitched to Netflix as a three season series, so I’m sure that there is nothing to be worried about and the second season will take us on another wild adventure. Imagine if Heroes or Lost stopped after one season, a great idea perfectly executed, that (pun intended) lost its way from season two onwards. Naturally, it is utterly unfair to tarnish Russian Doll with the same brush as its second season doesn’t exist yet. There is currently no details on episode count or release date, but early 2020 seems like a safe bet.
Meanwhile, Natasha Lyonne is back on Netflix soon with her fellow inmates of Litchfield Penitentiary in the final season of Orange is the New Black with the seventh season landing on Netflix July 26.
