It’s one for all and all for fun with The Three Musketeers’ 50th Anniversary 4K restoration coming to Studiocanal’s fantastic Vintage Classics range. Directed by Richard Lester, the star-studded Three Musketeers was initially conceived as a grand three-hour epic. However, around midway through production, it became clear that they would not meet the release date. That’s when producers Alexander and Ilya Salkind decided to split the movie into two shorter parts, with the sequel hitting cinemas in 1974 with The Four Musketeers.
Naturally, this did not go down well with the cast, who were paid for a single movie. The Salkind Clause was created as a direct result, meaning a single production can only be divided into two with prior contract negotiations. The clause is still used today. History lesson over.
To celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the 1970s swashbuckling classic, STUDIOCANAL is delighted to announce a brand-new 4K restoration of the star-studded THE THREE MUSKETEERS. Directed by Richard Lester (A Hard Day’s Night, Help!),the film will be available to own on 4K UHD for the very first time, on Blu-Ray, DVD and Digital from May 8. To accompany the release, the equally thrilling sequel, THE FOUR MUSKETEERS, has also enjoyed the same 4k treatment and will be available to own on the same day.
Starring Oliver Reed (Women in Love), Richard Chamberlain (The Towering Inferno) and Frank Finlay (Othello) as the titular Musketeers with Michael York (Logan’s Run) as D’Artagnan, THE THREE MUSKETEERS and THE FOUR MUSKETEERS boast exceptional supporting casts featuring many of the most lauded stars of the era including Charlton Heston (Ben-Hur), Raquel Welch (One Million Years BC), Christopher Lee (The Wicker Man), Faye Dunaway (Bonnie and Clyde), Roy Kinnear (Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory) and Spike Milligan (The Goon Show).
Both films come complete with a host of new special features and are a welcome addition to the ever-expanding Vintage Classics collection.
