You’d think that the fourth season of Rick & Morty was a no-brainer for Adult Swim. The animated series created by Dan Harmon & Justin Roiland went from cult favourite to massive hit last year when the long-awaited third season launched. A deal with Netflix to distribute the show globally opened up millions of new fans, and we’ve been itching for more episodes ever since.

In the Twitter age, it’s never been so easy to have a go at the person who co-created that show you love, but it’s equally as easy for said co-creator to respond. One disgruntled R&M fan voiced their opinion on the delay in new episodes after Rick & Morty appeared in a Run the Jewels music video.

“Quit wasting time and go finish the next R&M season, you lazy alcoholic. Run the Jewels can get the animators to make a music video, but we’re waiting on them for the next season? Nah, we’re waiting on you to finish writing it, like that fuckin book.”

Not one to ignore critics, Harmon offered a response in typical Dan Harmon fashion.

“I hear ya, tough spot. On one hand, it can be challenging, especially with crippling lazy alcoholism, to write a show that hasn’t been ordered by a network. On the other hand, the thought that fans like you pay the price…I mean…I’m gonna grab a drink.”

Aside from the unwarranted insults thrown at Harmon, the most shocking thing here is that Adult Swim hasn’t ordered a fourth season yet. Harmon has been vocal about the complexities of writing Rick & Morty, so it’s a mystery why Adult Swim didn’t pick the show up last year following the third season’s finale. Surely if Adult Swim won’t give R&M a fourth season, Netflix would be perfectly suited to provide Harmon and co with all the resources they need to make it happen.
