Supernatural Season 9 Review [Mild Spoilers]

Supernatural

Carry on my wayward sons, Supernatural is back!

Sam and Dean are back on the road as they try to figure out how to put the angels back into heaven. Following the events of season eight, Sam is in a bad way and in order to save him, Dean agrees to let an angel calling himself Ezekiel possess Sam to heal him from within.

Over the course of the 23 season nine episodes, the Winchesters aided by Castiel do battle with demons, help Crowley become a better king of hell, open a door to Oz and are faced with a high school musical about their adventures. All of this and more awaits our favourite demon hunters in a jam packed season..

Supernatural was a series I was a little late to the party to, already in its third season by the time I started watching it the show has become a firm favourite of mine over the years. The first five seasons remain the best with series creator Eric Kripke departing as showrunner, but the journey carried on without him and still offers its loyal fans surprises. Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles still find new depths to explore their characters. This is an especially difficult task as both characters have quite literally been to hell and back. after they have both died multiple times

As with all long running TV shows, there are a few bumpy episodes but its the overall season arc that counts and this year is an ambitious one. Unlike previous seasons that forgot how funny this show can be, season 9 has plenty of lighter moments and outright laugh out loud episodes. After almost a decade on the air, it is a true testament to the show that it continues to embrace the fandom and make it a part of the story.

The finale sets up a very promising season 10, to show how far behind us Brits are from the US transmissions, season 10 has already concluded stateside. Channel 5 hold the UK broadcast rights so fingers crossed we don’t have to wait too long. It will be a sad day when Supernatural comes to an end, thankfully we don’t have to think about that for a couple of years. Supernatural was recently renewed for an eleventh season and the CW network are committed to keeping the show going for as long as its popular.

Supernatural Season 9 is out now on DVD and Blu-ray.
