Star Wars The Last Jedi Tops $1 Billion Worldwide

Not that there was any doubt that the latest Star Wars sequel would join the $1 Billion Club, Rian Johnson’s The Last Jedi has done just that. After less than three weeks in cinemas worldwide, The Last Jedi has amassed $533 million domestically, and $523 million internationally for a global total of more than $1 billion.

Naturally, The Last Jedi is miles from where The Force Awakens was after the same number of days on release. Two years ago The Force Awakens had made more than $750 million in the US after 18 days; The Last Jedi has generated $530 million. There are many factors to consider before drawing the conclusion that this is a franchise in trouble. Firstly, it has made more than $530 million in North America, that’s a shed load of cash. Secondly, The Force Awakens played heavy on the nostalgia, who didn’t cry a little bit when Chewy and Han showed up in the trailer. Nobody that’s who. It remains to be seen if The Last Jedi can join The Force Awakens in the $2 Billion Club, but it looks set to give it a ruddy good shot.

2017 has been another trying year for the big studios (aside from Disney, obviously) with a plethora of big budget movies falling flat on their faces. Thankfully, The Last Jedi has helped end the year on a stronger note, and let’s not forget that Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle has quietly been making stacks of cash for the last two weeks. In fact, the Dwayne Johnson led revamp of the beloved 90s classic has clocked up more than $340 million worldwide thus far. With close to $200 million taken domestically, I think it is fair to say that a sequel will be high on Sony’s to do list.
