Bryan Cranston & James Franco Star in New Clips From Why Him?

WHY HIM

Bryan Cranston and James Franco are at odds with each other in the first trailer for R-rated comedy Why Him? BryCran stars as a straight-laced dad who is less than impressed that his daughter (Zoey Deutch) is dating an obnoxious internet billionaire (Franco). Naturally, Papa Cranston does everything he can to split them up, but he’s underestimated his daughter’s new boyfriend and it doesn’t take long before things get out of hand. Really out of hand.

To an entire generation, Cranston is best known as meth kingpin Walter White in the multi-award-winning Breaking Bad, but it was his performance as strung out parent Hal in Malcolm in the Middle that introduced me to the powerhouse of Cranston. While he’s detoured back into comedy here and there (his Super Sweet 60th sketch went viral), he has has continued turning in dramatic performances aplenty in the likes of Trumbo, The Infiltrator, and Argo. So it’s something of a departure for BC to be going all out comedy, but it’s a welcome return to the genre for the supremely likeable actor.

Directed by John Hamburg (I Love You, Man) and also starring Megan Mullally, Adam Devine and Keegan-Michael Key, Why Him? is released in the UK on Boxing Day. Check out the two new clips below.

Over the holidays, Ned (Bryan Cranston), an overprotective but loving dad and his family visit his daughter at Stanford, where he meets his biggest nightmare: her well-meaning but socially awkward Silicon Valley billionaire boyfriend, Laird (James Franco). The straight-laced Ned thinks Laird, who has absolutely no filter, is a wildly inappropriate match for his daughter. The one-sided rivalry—and Ned’s panic level—escalate when he finds himself increasingly out of step in the glamorous high-tech hub, and learns that Laird is about to pop the question.
