I think we can all agree that YouTube’s brief attempt to compete in what future generations will call “The Great Streaming Battle” was less than successful. While they produced some great scripted original content like Cobra Kai, YouTube failed to make their premium service worth the price they were asking.
Before we feel too sorry for YouTube, it’s YouTube they’re not short of a few quid. Earlier this year, YouTube bosses revealed that all their premium content would be available (with ads) from September 2019. If that didn’t immediately kill off their paid-for service, the announcement that they were planning of scaling back on scripted content did the trick. As promised, some of the premium content is available to watch for free now, including the first season of Karate Kid sequel series, Cobra Kai. The second season will be available soon, but you can watch the first episode now.
Cobra Kai surprised everybody by being the Karate Kid sequel we never knew we needed. Shifting the focus to the antagonist of the first movie, Johnny Lawrence, the last 30 years haven’t treated the former bully kindly. The good news is that a third season will be arriving soon, so now there is no excuse not to get all caught up on this fine series.
Thirty years after the events of the 1984 All Valley Karate Tournament, Johnny Lawrence’s life has taken a rocky turn as he tries to forget a past that constantly haunts him. He seeks redemption by reopening the infamous Cobra Kai karate dojo. But the LaRusso-Lawrence rivalry of yesteryear is reignited when their lives become intertwined with the next generation of “karate kids.”
