If like more or less everybody who saw it, the US remake of Godzilla didn’t fully satisfy your Kaiju cravings then you’ll be thrilled to learn that the Japanese reboot of the iconic monster is everything you’ve been waiting for. The first trailer for Godzilla Resurgence has arrived and it’s the first Godzilla movie from Japan since 2004’s Final Wars.

The project was put into production two years ago after Gareth Edwards’ remake proved to be a success. We’ll be seeing much more of Godzilla in the years to come, a sequel to Edwards’ movie hits cinemas June 8, 2018 and a title fight against King Kong set for a 2020 release. Resurgence is aiming to revive the homegrown Japanese franchise with several sequels tentatively planned.

I grew up watching old Godzilla movies and have been burned twice by lacklustre US remakes, while I admire Edwards as a filmmaker, his Godzilla was a bitter disappointment and contained very little screentime for the titular character.Without wishing to sound like I’m nitpicking, but if the movie is called Godzilla then surely it should feature plenty of Godzilla carnage.  I’m all for building up to a grand reveal, but when Godzilla has an extended cameo in his own movie you know something is wrong.

There’s no UK release date yet, but Godzilla Resurgence arrives in Japan on July 29.
