Drew Barrymore stars in her first ever TV series alongside Sheriff McSexy Face (aka Timothy Olyphant) in Netflix’s decidedly offbeat comedy Santa Clarita Diet.
Barrymore and Chiseled Jaw McGraw star as married real estate agents who are enjoying the good life with their idyllic home and perfect family. That all changes one day when Sheila (Barrymore) can no longer feel her heartbeat and is getting mad cravings for raw meat. As it turns out, being undead is superb for your career prospects and finding a deserving person to kill and eat can be a fun family activity.
The Netflix production machine is in full swing now and new original shows, movies, cartoons and factual offerings every week. By no stretch of the imagination is every Netflix original a success, or even watchable. Both of Adam Sandler’s movies were appalling, Kevin James’ attempt was even worse, but does any of that matter when Netflix can turn out things like Daredevil, Orange is the New Black, Black Mirror, Jessica Jones, House of Cards, Stranger Things and Lemony Snickett. I’ve yet to see a great Netflix Original movie; the Fran Kranz lead Rebirth is the best (in my opinion) so far, but there’s no denying that Netflix’s original TV shows are working for the most part.
Also starring geek royalty Nathan Fillion, all first season episodes of Santa Clarita Diet will be available on Netflix on February 3rd.
In Santa Clarita Diet, Joel (Timothy Olyphant, Justified) and Sheila (Drew Barrymore, Blended) are husband and wife realtors leading vaguely discontented lives in the L.A. suburb of Santa Clarita with their teenaged daughter Abby (Liv Hewson), until Sheila goes through a dramatic change sending their lives down a road of death and destruction…but in a good way.
