We're making a few changes...sorry for the inconvience.

top-of-the-lake-2

It has been four years since Jane Campion’s Top of the Lake concluded its first season with a riveting mystery. Led by the Mad Men’s Elizabeth Moss, the hypnotic drama returns for its long-awaited second season this year and to prove it, the first trailer has arrived.

Without offering too many spoilers for the first season (even though it has been available to watch for over four years), I’ll keep plot details to a minimum. Set four years after the events of season one, Detective Robin Griffin (Moss) finds herself in Sydney, Australia. However, her personal life will have to take a back seat as the body of a young woman washes up the shore of the beach in a suitcase.

The first series was a sumptuously shot mystery with first class performances (Holly Hunter yo!) that was utterly compelling. While its grim subject matter won’t make it an easy watch, the trailer promises a rewarding and rich experience. Be that as it may, I do hope Elizabeth Moss finds time to make a comedy as between this and The Handmaid’s Tale, Moss is doubling down on hard-hitting drama.

Featuring Game of Thrones‘ Gwendoline Christie and in her second regular TV appearance of the year (after Big Little Lies), Nicole Kidman. Top of the Lake: China Girl will launch on BBC Two later this year, check out the trailer below.

“Top of the Lake: China Girl” is a crime mystery story that finds Detective Robin Griffin recently returned to Sydney and trying to rebuild her life. When the body of an Asian girl washes up on Bondi Beach, there appears little hope of finding the killer, until Robin realizes “China Girl” didn’t die alone. Robin looks to the investigation to restore herself, but her problems are personal. Haunted by a daughter given up at birth, Robin desperately wants to find her, yet dreads revealing the truth of her conception. But her search to discover “China Girl’s” identity will take her into the city’s darkest recesses and closer than she could have imagined to the secrets of her own heart”
