The fourth entry in the Purge franchise takes the story back to the beginning with a prequel that charts the very first Purge in the U.S of A. Previously titled Purge: The Island, the more simplified The First Purge will launch in US cinemas rather iconically on July 4.
The previous sequel (Election Year) made good use of the waking nightmare that was the Presidential Election Campaign to its marketing advantage, and they’ve only gone and done it again. Much like its title, The First Purge keeps things simple with the debut piece of marketing with the use of a hauntingly familiar red baseball cap.
In addition to the clever clogs poster, the first official synopsis has been revealed;
Behind every tradition lies a revolution. Next Independence Day, witness the rise of our country’s 12 hours of annual lawlessness. Welcome to the movement that began as a simple experiment: The First Purge. To push the crime rate below one percent for the rest of the year, the New Founding Fathers of America (NFFA) test a sociological theory that vents aggression for one night in one isolated community. But when the violence of oppressors meets the rage of the marginalized, the contagion will explode from the trial-city borders and spread across the nation.
For many franchises (especially horror), a prequel is usually the end of the line, that’s not the case for the cost-effective Purge franchise as a TV series spin-off is already in the works and is set to debut late this year. Naturally, the low production costs and anthology friendly concept means this is one film series that has longevity.
The First Purge will be unleashed in UK cinemas on July 6, a full trailer should arrive sometime next month.
