After a brief in cinemas only teaser, the first full trailer for the impossibly titled Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) has landed. After being the best thing about Suicide Squad, Margot Robbie is back and Joker free as Harley Quinn.

In the years following Suicide Squad and that open-ended ending, Harley Quinn has parted ways with Joker to enjoy a Batman free party in Gotham. Where has The Dark Knight gone to? Nobody knows, but he no longer resembles Ben Affleck. Since the events of Suicide Squad, Batman has disappeared, leaving Gotham City unprotected from crime, and Harley Quinn has left the Joker. When Cassandra Cain, a young girl, comes across a diamond belonging to crime lord Black Mask, Harley joins forces with Black Canary, Huntress and Renee Montoya to help protect her.

Ewan McGregor is playing Black Mask, and he seems to be having some fun going against type to play a bad guy. I’ll level with you; I wasn’t hugely excited about any further helpings of anything connected to Suicide Squad. James Gunn’s involvement in the confusingly titled sequel, The Suicide Squad, was enough to get me back on board, and now this trailer confirms that DC is a great place to be right now. Todd Philips Joker looks set to break October box office records, and maybe get nominated for a few Oscars in the process. Birds of Prey looks like a lot of fun, and I hope the full movie can be as entertaining. Directed by Cathy Yan, Birds of Prey stars Margot Robbie, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Rosie Perez, Chris Messina, Ella Jay Basco, Ali Wong, and Ewan McGregor.

Birds of Prey is released in cinemas on February 7, 2020.
