The long-delayed adaptation of the best-selling game series Borderlands finally hits cinemas later this year, and the proof it won’t be buried in a vault as a tax write-off, the first trailer has arrived. Directed and co-written by Eli Roth, Lionsgate’s star-packed movie version features Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Edgar Ramírez, Ariana Greenblatt, Bobby Lee, Florian Munteanu, Gina Gershon, and Jamie Lee Curtis
Roth completed production on the movie in 2021, after a lengthy gap of almost two years; January 2023 saw two weeks of reshoots get started under the direction of Tim Miller (Deadpool). Roth was in pre-production on his Grindhouse slasher Thanksgiving, which was filming from mid-March to May. Naturally, that has led some fans to speculate that Roth could have helmed the reshoots, but we’ll save such speculation for another day. For now, check out the trailer below.
Lilith, an infamous outlaw with a mysterious past, reluctantly returns to her home planet of Pandora to find the missing daughter of the universe’s most powerful S.O.B., Atlas. Lilith forms an alliance with an unexpected team – Roland, a former elite mercenary, now desperate for redemption; Tiny Tina, a feral pre-teen demolitionist; Krieg, Tina’s musclebound, rhetorically challenged protector; Tannis, the scientist with a tenuous grip on sanity; and Claptrap, a persistently wiseass robot. These unlikely heroes must battle alien monsters and dangerous bandits to find and protect the missing girl, who may hold the key to unimaginable power. The fate of the universe could be in their hands but they’ll be fighting for something more: each other.
