Unlike Network or Cable Television that releases its viewing figures regularly, Netflix has rarely given much of an insight into how many people are watching. Occasionally, Netflix reveals a little information, but the streaming platform is now experimenting with releasing the top ten most watched TV shows/films that UK subscribers have been binging.

“It’s a test as we want to make sure this information is useful for you. So we may tweak it in the weeks ahead. [For instance], we’re not including kids right now. And if people don’t find it useful we’ll stop.” Explains a Netflix spokesperson.

The insightful report via Deadline reveals the unusual benchmark that Netflix is using to measuring viewers for a series “most-watched individual season of a show, film or special and ‘watched’ means subscribers finished at least 70% of one episode.” Woah there, watching less than one episode of a series that could be eight, ten, or thirteen episodes feels like a pretty unfair way to measure success. The recent Adam Sandler comedy, Murder Mystery, is reportedly the most watched Netflix original with more than 30 million subscribers watching (some of) the film over the last few days.

A top ten for a handful of genres is a long way from viewership numbers, but Netflix is under no obligation to reveal any details. That said, its recent round of cancellations suggest that Netflix is paying far more attention to how many eyeballs are watching any given original in its first month.
