Having completed (against the odds) the six seasons promise of the #SixSeasonsAndAMovie for Community, Dan Harmon is still hoping to make the and a movie part of that hashtag a reality.
Speaking to The Wrap, Dan Harmon revealed that he’s been having conversations with former Community directors the Russo Brothers and Justin Lin to bring Greendale to the big screen.
“I keep having conversations with the kinds of people that could make it happen. The Russo brothers moved from ‘Community’ to becoming industry shapers. So did one of our most popular directors, Justin Lin, who directed the first paintball episode.
I hope I’m not talking out of school by saying that. I’ll get together with him [Justin Lin] every once in a while, or we’ll have dinner, and we’re talking — we keep trying to figure out how to do this. Those are the kinds of guys, the Russos, plus Justin, plus a humble little me — maybe there is a way to secure the money and the momentum to make something happen. But fingers crossed — don’t want to jinx it.”
The Russo Brothers graduated from Community with honours and went on to direct Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Civil War, they’re currently in production on a little sequel called Avengers: Infinity War. Justin Lin helped revive the Fast and Furious franchise but bowed out after making four back to back sequels to helm Star Trek Beyond. Lin is expected to return to the Fast universe for the next sequel, so where a possible Community movie would fit in is anybody’s guess.
The first three seasons of Community are fantastic, but the show never recovered from losing Harmon for the fourth season, and almost half the original cast over the years. The fifth and Yahoo’s swansong season saw Harmon return and the quality improved, but the loss of Donald Glover’s Troy, was perhaps one the show couldn’t withstand. Should a Community movie finally happen, it would be weird if Glover wasn’t involved, but at this stage, it’s too early to say.
