Because even trailers need their own teaser now, ahead of the full trailer landing on Friday, Universal has released a short teaser for Fast and Furious 9, or as the teaser states F9 The Fast Saga.
The new film will be the first time Dwayne Johnson hasn’t appeared since his character joined the FAMILY in Fast Five. Onset beef, and a last summer’s spin-off, Hobbs and Shaw, and perhaps Johnson and Diesel will patch their differences up. That said, a cameo in a post-credits scene that sets up next years Fast and Furious 10 isn’t impossible.
As to what Fast 9 has to offer, a gravel-voiced Diesel, ridiculous action, no respect for speed limits or health and safety, and 729 uses of the word family. Can the Fast family hit $1 billion at the box office without Dwayne Johnson? Hobbs and Shaw made a respectable $760 million worldwide last year, that’s more than any pre-Johnson Fast movie. Before Johnson joined the franchise, the highest-grossing was Fast & Furious in 2009 ($363 million). It’s slightly unfair as it wasn’t until Fast Five that the series shifted to Mission Impossible/James Bond-style antics. That said, it will be curious to see how the franchise performs without him. We’ll bring you the full trailer on Friday, but for now enjoy the teaser for the trailer (which is essentially a scene from the movie) below.
Justin Lin returns to the hot seat to direct Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Nathalie Emmanuel, John Cena, Helen Mirren, Charlize Theron and Michael Rooker. Fast and Furious 9 hits cinemas on May 22. The main franchise is due to come to an end next year with Fast and Furious 10 landing April, 2021, they better get moving if they’re going to make that deadline.
