With Evil Dead Burn landing on digital on August 24, followed by DVD, Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD on October 12, it is a very good time to be a Deadite. But before the franchise’s newest nightmare tears its way into homes, Studiocanal is taking us back to one of the nastiest horror reboots of the last 20 years. Fede Álvarez’s brutal Evil Dead is coming to 4K Ultra HD in the UK for the very first time on October 19, and honestly, if any modern horror film was built to test your telly’s ability to display questionable amounts of blood, it is probably this one.

Released in 2013, Evil Dead had the unenviable job of reviving one of horror’s most beloved names without simply copying Sam Raimi’s original. Instead, Álvarez went meaner, nastier and more punishing, delivering a cabin-in-the-woods nightmare that felt less like a cosy nostalgia trip and more like being attacked with a rusty nail gun. The story follows Mia, a young woman taken to a remote cabin by her friends to help her kick addiction. Unfortunately, they discover the Book of the Dead in the basement, because of course they do, and before long the weekend from hell becomes very literal. Possession, mutilation, rainstorms of blood and some spectacularly poor decision-making follow. Behind the scenes, the reboot had the blessing of the original Evil Dead team, with Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell and Rob Tapert producing, which helped make it feel like a legitimate new branch of the franchise rather than a cash-in.

This new 2-disc Collector’s Edition includes a fresh 4K restoration, both the theatrical and unrated cuts, new artwork by Krishna Bala Shenoi and a 64-page booklet. The extras are stacked too, with a new feature, Beyond the Blood: Chris Tilly on Evil Dead, plus cast and filmmaker commentary, and so much more.
