The highly anticipated first trailer for Robert Eggers’ (The Witch, The Lighthouse) take on Nosferatu has arrived, and it’s dripping in Gothic horror in every frame. While he remains largely unseen, Bill Skarsgård stars as the titular vampire alongside Lily-Rose Depp as the haunted young woman who becomes the subject of Nosferatu’s obsession. Their intense and sinister relationship unleashes untold horror upon those around them.

Joining the cast in this cinematic love letter to Gothic horror are Nicholas Hoult, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, Ralph Ineson, Simon McBurney and the incomparable Willem Dafoe. A Robert Eggers film wouldn’t be complete without Dafoe, who earned an Oscar Nomination for his role in Shadow of the Vampire, a must-see for any horror enthusiast. If you haven’t experienced it yet, I urge you to seek it out immediately.

I wasn’t entirely a fan of Eggers’ last offering, The Norseman, but the power of his previous efforts, The Witch and The Lighthouse, is undeniable, and the combination of Eggers and Nosferatu is just too tantalising to pass up. Universal tried to refresh the Dracula brand last year with Renfield (giving us Nicolas Cage as Dracula), and the still unreleased in the UK, The Last Voyage of the Demeter, both tanked at the box office. Here’s hoping Eggers’ lavishly made take does better, as this could be a serious contender for next year’s Oscars.

Nosferatu is set for release on December 25th
