As we edge closer to the spooky season, we’re getting a taste of some of the fresh new horror TV shows filling our cold, dark nights. Ryan Murphy, the man with at least a dozen active TV shows, is back with an all-new horror story. Well, a new season of American Horror Story will land later this year, but before that, his new series Grotesquire will launch, and the first trailer has arrived.
“A series of heinous crimes have unsettled a small community. Detective Lois Tryon (Nash-Betts) feels these crimes are eerily personal, as if someone — or something — is taunting her. At home, Lois grapples with a strained relationship with her daughter (Goodwin), a husband (Vance) in long-term hospital care and her own inner demons. With no leads and unsure of where to turn, she accepts the help of Sister Megan (Diamond), a nun and journalist with the Catholic Guardian. Sister Megan, with her own difficult past, has seen the worst of humanity, yet she still believes in its capacity for good. Lois, on the other hand, fears the world is succumbing to evil. As Lois and Sister Megan string together clues, they find themselves ensnared in a sinister web that only seems to raise more questions than answers.”
The star power of Niecy Nash-Betts (Scream Queens, Monster) is all I needed to know to give this series a watch. The long-term Murphy collaborator was hilarious in Scream Queens and brilliant in Monster and got to star in the short-lived Rookie spin-off series, Rookie: Feds. The first trailer looks suitably bleak and is just the sort of gripping horror thriller that’s made for Halloween.
Grotesquerie will begin its run on FX on September 25, UK fans can catch it shortly after on Disney+.
