A little look ahead at some bigger releases coming up over the next few months. Summer might be over but the film selection on the way is warming up.
December sees Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law return in Sherlock Holmes: Game Of Shadows, the first film was a offensive amount of fun and the sequel looks set to recapture that as Noomi Rapace, Stephen Fry and Jared Harris join the cast.
The long delayed and a little bit unwanted remake/prequel/reboot (lets call it a preboot) of The Thing is finally released. Set before the events of the John Carpenter classic. Feels wrong it is called simply The Thing, that said I’d be moaning if they gave it a subtitle. I’m not sold on the trailer but I was wrong about the excellent Rise of The Planet Of The Apes.
Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, sees Tom Cruise back as Ethan Hunt this time the entire IMF team have been disbanded and Hunt looks set to take the fall for a crime he didn’t commit. Going on the run with a new team (which contains the lovely Simon Pegg). Plot details are a bit hazy but the trailer looks action packed, JJ Abrams is producing and Incredibles director Brad Bird makes his live action debut. There’s every reason for it to be good.
One film that has no reason to be good at all is the sequel to Johnny English. Rowan Atkinson returns as the accident prone spy in another action adventure. It’s been 8 years since the first film and acclaimed director Oliver Parker has decided that after St Trinian’s 2: The Legend of Fritton’s Gold, anything is fair game. Dominic West, Gillian Anderson, Richard Schiff and Rosamund Pike take leave of their normally good career moves to co-star.
And finally, if you have yet to seek out Troll Hunter please do as it’s already getting an American remake. While American remakes can occasionally go well (Let Me In) I fear Troll Hunter is better left as the gem it is.
