Pack your sleeping bag, sharpen your marshmallow stick and absolutely do not ignore the locals warning you about that cursed old summer camp, because Friday the 13th is heading to 4K Ultra HD in the UK for the first time.
Warner Bros. Home Entertainment is releasing Sean S. Cunningham’s 1980 slasher classic on 4K Ultra HD and SteelBook on October 12, which means Crystal Lake is about to look sharper, bloodier and more worryingly inviting than ever. The original Friday the 13th is one of those horror films that changed everything. Made for a relatively small budget, it became a massive box office hit and helped turn the slasher movie into one of the defining horror trends of the 1980s. Before long, every remote camp, sleepy town and suspiciously under-supervised group of teenagers had reason to be nervous.
Ironically, the funny thing about Friday the 13th is that Jason Voorhees, the hockey-mask-wearing icon most people associate with the series, is not actually the main killer in this first film. The mask would not arrive until later (much later), but the legend starts here, with the doomed camp, the name Voorhees and one of horror’s most famous final shocks. The film also features an early screen appearance from Kevin Bacon, whose fate remains one of the most memorable kills in the whole franchise. Add in Betsy Palmer, Adrienne King and Harry Manfredini’s instantly recognisable “ki ki ki, ma ma ma” score, and you have a proper slice of horror history.
This new 4K release comes loaded with extras too, including commentary from director Sean S. Cunningham with cast and crew, Friday the 13th Reunion, Fresh Cuts: New Tales from Friday the 13th, The Man Behind the Legacy: Sean S. Cunningham, Lost Tales from Camp Blood, The Friday the 13th Chronicles and Secrets Galore Behind the Gore. So, before we revisit the franchise for the prequel series Crystal Lake, the original that started it all is getting the 4K upgrade it deserves. Just maybe leave the camping trip until November.
