It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia might have been on the air for twelve seasons, but it’s also one of the few long-running sitcoms that is still funny after more than a decade of shenanigans. While we know that FX picked up the show for seasons 13 & 14 last year, the future of one cast member remains in doubt.

During the season 12 finale, Dennis Reynolds decided to leave his old life behind and leave the bar to raise his child. I don’t think anybody thought that Dennis’ exit would be permanent, but Glenn Howerton’s new gig alongside Patton Oswald in NBC’s sitcom A.P. Bio has caused speculation over his future on Sunny.

Speaking at a press event for A.P Bio, Howerton sounded confident that he would be rejoining the gang, kind of.

”I’ve not officially left It’s Always Sunny, so I hope people understand that. This is a totally separate project that I’m doing. The thing about doing a show for 12 years is that people might have a hard time seeing you as anything else […] I wasn’t planning on jumping into anything else, but I saw it was Lorne Michaels and Seth Meyers, and I just loved it.”

He added in response to a separate question;

“I don’t know if this is going to turn into a ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ thing where we make them when we can or if it’s gonna pick up where it left off and it’s gonna be every year again. I don’t really know […] We’ve talked about [a gap between season]. We love the show and we love each other and we want to keep doing it and if we can get away with just doing it whenever we want, why not? Creatively speaking, we just want the show to be good, so if any of us is feeling burned out and we feel like it’s gonna compromise the quality of the show, we just won’t do it.”

No actor wants to be typecast, so Howerton’s desire to try something new is understandable, but Reynolds is no ordinary character. I would be surprised if Howerton quit Sunny, his schedule with A.P Bio will allow him to do both, and if there’s a bit of a gap between seasons then so be it. We’ll find out this year as Sunny returns sometime in the Winter. Check out the trailer for A.P Bio below.
