Coming to cinemas in November is war time horror movie The Awakening, starring The Wire’s Dominic West, Rebecca Hall (The Town) and Imedla Staunton who surely should be a Dame by now. Set in England in 1921 West stars as Ghost Hunter Robert Mallory, he’s drafted in by cynic Florence Cathcart (Hall) after a supernatural occurrence at a boarding school. The trailer might look a little cliched in places but I have a soft spot for period set supernatural tales.
It’s co-produced by BBC Films and is directed by Nick Murphy who makes he feature film debut, he’d previously helmed episodes of ITV’s Primeval and the BBC mini-series Occupation. The Awakening is a bit of a generic title and it does bare a slight resemblance to the outstanding Spanish film The Orphanage. I doubt it will set the box office on fire, but will appeal to the winter cinema goer looking for a jump or two.
