As the first ever Essex International Film Festival draws closer, we thought it was time to highlight some of the fantastic shorts that will be part of this inaugural event. Written and performed by Olivia Bennett, Metronome is a stunningly realised project from director Laura Jean Healey.
Full of tension-inducing cinematography from Benjamin C Mills, Metronome is an audacious piece of film making that makes for an unforgettable experience. Without straying into spoiler territory, I needed a strong cup of tea after, you know, the kind you have to use two bags and just a drop of milk (or dairy substitute if you’re so inclined).
While we weren’t able to meet in person, director Laura Jean Healey was kind enough to answer a couple of questions (via email) about the hauntingly effective short.
What can you tell us about the film?
The metronome, an ever-present and indifferent tool designed to help the drummer find her rhythm, becomes her biggest antagonist. It serves as a blank slate onto which she projects all of her negative thoughts and deep-seated fears – of not being good enough, of being an imposter.
Ultimately, the drummer is overwhelmed by her relentless pursuit of perfection, unable to conquer the Metronome that represents that nagging little voice within us all, whispering that we are not enough. It is this fear of failure that drew me into the project and made me realise that I had to direct this film.
What drew you to the script and structure of the film?
“When I first read Olivia’s script, I immediately connected with the character of the drummer. I could vividly picture her intense, one-sided battle of wills against her perceived nemesis – the metronome. I was drawn to her unwavering desire, determination, and passion to master her craft, despite ultimately being defeated by her own inner demons.”
As a visual artist and filmmaker, I strive to craft stories where my female characters possess a strong sense of self and determination, driven to fight for what they desire – even in the face of failure.
