Mystery Road: Origin returns for a gripping second outing, heading deep into the Australian Outback once more as the acclaimed prequel continues to chart the early years of one of television’s most compelling detectives. Mark Coles Smith (Apple Cider Vinegar, Picnic at Hanging Rock) is back as a young Jay Swan, facing a case that threatens not only to expose long-buried secrets, but to upend his entire life.

Acorn Media International has announced that Mystery Road: Origin Series 2 will arrive on DVD and digital on February 16, following its BBC run, which begins tonight. Picking up the story of Jay Swan — hailed by The Guardian as one of “Australia’s all-time greatest screen sleuths” — the new series once again places character and atmosphere front and centre. Coles Smith is joined by a strong supporting cast including Tuuli Narkle (Territory, All My Friends Are Racist), Clarence Ryan (Territory, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga), Robyn Malcolm (After The Party, The Survivors), Geoff Morrell (The Lord Of The Rings: The Rings of Power, Ice Road: Vengeance) and Nicholas Bell (Elvis, Bay of Fires).

Set six months after the events of the first series, Jay is attempting to build a quieter life with partner Mary (Narkle) in the fading town of Loch Iris. Together they are caring for Mary’s niece Anya and awaiting the arrival of their first child. But the promise of stability quickly begins to fray as the town’s dense forests and looming lake take on an increasingly ominous presence.

Jay is soon drawn into the investigation of a missing young girl and the suspicious drowning of a former nun. As he digs deeper, Loch Iris closes ranks, revealing itself as a community bound by silence and secrets. The more Jay uncovers, the clearer it becomes that the town’s past is far from buried — and that exposing the truth may come at a devastating personal cost.

Relocating to a striking new setting, Series 2 makes powerful use of Western Australia’s forests, dams and waterways, wrapping its mystery in an atmosphere that is both haunting and beautiful. With its rich characters, layered storytelling and a growing sense of unease, Mystery Road: Origin Series 2 continues to build on the franchise’s reputation as one of the most distinctive voices in modern crime drama.
