New Mutants Might Be Delayed Again

Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox has left a question mark hanging over the future of some Marvel characters as we know them. X-Men Dark Phoenix and New Mutants were set to be the last two X-Men films released under Fox, but the latter might have been set another setback.

The long-delayed comic book movie might not even make it cinemas if rumours are to be believed. Multiple sources claim that Fox may dump the film on Hulu as “Fox and Josh Boone (writer/director) are struggling to come to terms on a comprehensible finished product”. There is also a mention of a possible delay to November, but Fox has made no official comment,

Josh Boone’s YA themed horror take on New Mutants made an impression with its debut trailer that arrived back in October 2017! The February 2018 release date was pushed back to April 2019, then later delayed to August. At the time, Fox’s claim that minor reshoots (and more time for digital effects) was needed, seemed reasonable. For the first delay, the second was suspicious, but here’s the funny thing, those reshoots never happened. That’s right, the very reason the film was delayed hasn’t been addressed more than a year after the fact.

At the time, the reshoots were believed to be to add more horror based on the positive response to the trailer. There were rumours that the film Boone shot and the trailer we saw were two very different things. The teaser suggested an R-rated horror within the X-Men universe, but Fox refused to commit to a tone leading to a pause in the reshoots. Boone confirmed last year that the film would be PG-13, but comments he made, later on, seemed to more ambiguous.

“It’s the kind of movie that could go R, or it could be a hard PG-13. As I was saying before in terms of subgenres or the genre, it is obviously teased as a horror film, and most horror films these days are R-rated, but it stars a very young cast, so we’ll see. It really is what the movie wants to be. The studio is open to either rating… Traditionally, superhero movies are PG-13 other than Logan and the Deadpool movies, and generally, horror films are R-rated, so we’ll see where this one falls. It is a very scary, edgy movie.”

Starring Anya Taylor-Joy, Maisie Williams, Alice Braga, Charlie Heaton, and Henry Zaga, New Mutants is currently scheduled to be released this August, maybe.
