Pacific Rim: Uprising Debuts First Trailer

The first trailer for the long-awaited Pacific Rim: Uprising has arrived, and it’s all a bit Transformers. The sequel to Guillermo del Toro’s 2013 movie managed a sequel by the skin of its mechanical teeth mostly thanks to a robust performance in China. Guillermo del Toro decided to step away from the director’s chair and handed those duties to Daredevil showrunner Steven S. DeKnight.

The first trailer offers lots of giant-sized action, and a less than rousing call to arms from new leading man John Boyega (playing the son of Idris Elba’s character from the first film). Amongst the city levelling action scenes is a few shots of the return of Charlie Day and Burn Gorman (he must have a fantastic agent) as Dr. Newt Geiszler and Dr. Hermann Gottlieb respectively.

I enjoyed Pacific Rim, I think, I’ve seen it at least three times yet have no clear-cut memory of my feelings towards it. That could be a sign of my failing memory, or it could be a sign that Pacific Rim wasn’t enjoyable enough to remember that well. The first film wasn’t a huge hit domestically with just $101 million from the US, of the $309 million the film generated from overseas, $111 million of it came from China. Even though US movies only get to keep a quarter of the box office from China, it was more than enough to make a sequel a viable option.

The trailer for Uprising does look like a Transformers knock-off, a significant factor of me wanting to see the first film was Guillermo del Toro, and while he remains involved as a producer, it’s not quite enough to get me excited for this one just yet.

Starring alongside John Boyega is Scott Eastwood, Cailee Spaeny, Jing Tian, with Charlie Day, Burn Gorman and Rinko Kikuchi. Pacific Rim: Uprising lands in cinemas on March 23, 2018.

The globe-spanning conflict between otherworldly monsters of mass destruction and the human-piloted super-machines built to vanquish them was only a prelude to the all-out assault on humanity in Pacific Rim Uprising.

John Boyega (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) stars as the rebellious Jake Pentecost, a once-promising Jaeger pilot whose legendary father gave his life to secure humanity’s victory against the monstrous “Kaiju.” Jake has since abandoned his training only to become caught up in a criminal underworld. But when an even more unstoppable threat is unleashed to tear through our cities and bring the world to its knees, he is given one last chance to live up to his father’s legacy by his estranged sister, Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi)—who is leading a brave new generation of pilots that have grown up in the shadow of war. As they seek justice for the fallen, their only hope is to unite together in a global uprising against the forces of extinction.

Jake is joined by gifted rival pilot Lambert (The Fate of the Furious‘ Scott Eastwood) and 15-year-old Jaeger hacker Amara (newcomer Cailee Spaeny), as the heroes of the PPDC become the only family he has left. Rising up to become the most powerful defense force to ever walk the earth, they will set course for a spectacular all-new adventure on a towering scale.
