Good news for anyone who likes their romance with a side of witchcraft, family curses and extremely 90s Sandra Bullock/Nicole Kidman energy: Practical Magic is getting a new 4K UHD Blu-ray release.
The beloved 1998 fantasy romance will be available to purchase on 4K UHD Blu-ray from August 24, followed by a SteelBook release on October 5. As if by magic, the newly remastered edition arrives just ahead of the UK theatrical release of the long-awaited sequel, Practical Magic 2, which is due in cinemas on September 11.
Based on Alice Hoffman’s novel, Practical Magic follows sisters Sally and Gillian Owens, played by Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, who come from a family of witches where falling in love is less fairytale and more occupational hazard. Their gift may help guide fate, but it comes with one fairly brutal drawback: any man they fall for is doomed to an untimely death. Not ideal, really.
Directed by Griffin Dunne, the film has only grown in reputation since its original release, becoming a cosy cult favourite for anyone who likes their magic with a bit of heartbreak, sisterhood and small-town New England atmosphere.
The new 4K release will include fresh bonus content featuring the cast and creative team reflecting on the film’s legacy, which feels about right for a movie that has quietly spent the last few decades becoming far more beloved than its initial reception might have suggested.
Alongside Bullock and Kidman, the film features a properly stacked cast including Dianne Wiest, Stockard Channing, Goran Višnjić and Aidan Quinn. The screenplay is by Robin Swicord, Akiva Goldsman and Adam Brooks, with Denise Di Novi producing.
Practical Magic arrives on 4K UHD Blu-ray on August 24, with the SteelBook edition following on October 5.
