Based on the critically acclaimed, best-selling videogame of the same name, Shudder Original The Mortuary Assistant brings its demons, death and dread to Blu-ray, DVD and digital on 20 July 2026, courtesy of Acorn Media International. Hailed as ‘a rare win for horror game adaptations’ that ‘delivers fun, creepy demonic horror’ by Ginger Nuts of Horror, the film sees award-winning director Jeremiah Kipp (Slapface) take on Brian Clarke’s cult first-person horror simulation and dig deeper into its chilling lore.

Willa Holland (The O.C., Arrow) stars as Rebecca Owens, a newly certified mortician with a troubled past, who is hired at River Fields Mortuary and assigned to the night shift. But what begins as a routine evening of embalming soon takes a terrifying turn. The lights flicker, the bodies refuse to stay still and Rebecca realises she may not be alone.

Directed by Jeremiah Kipp (Slapface) and co-starring Paul Sparks (Boardwalk Empire, House of Cards), The Mortuary Assistant brings Brian Clarke’s cult horror game to life with possession, trauma, gore and outstanding practical effects. Horror Society calls it ‘a faithful adaptation to a very underrated game’ and ‘an entertaining horror film’, adding that Holland is ‘fantastic’ and the effects are ‘a must see’, while Nevermore Horror praises it as ‘a very poignant metaphor for addiction and trauma’ and says fans hoping for a film that does the game justice are ‘definitely getting your money’s worth’.
