The first trailer for Star Trek Lower Decks has landed, and the animated CBS All Access series looks like it’s going to be a hoot. Created by Mike McMahan (Solar Opposites, Rick & Morty), Lower Decks tells the previously untold tales of the Starfleet crew who don’t work on the bridge or go on sexy missions. These are the other hard-working support crew on the lesser-known of Starfleet’s ships.
In many ways, it is surprising that an animated comedy series set in the Star Trek universe has taken this long to materialise. The franchise has experimented with animation back in the 70s with the Star Trek Animated Series. Most of the original cast reprised their roles for what many fans still consider the fourth season of the original series. While we might have a had a few unintentional chuckles, this is the first out and out comedy in Star Trek, and it looks ruddy marvellous. There are no current details on where or when Lower Decks will be available in the UK, but episodes land on CBS All Access this summer.
Star Trek: Lower Decks will focus on the support crew serving on one of Starfleet’s least important ships. The series will be produced by CBS’ Eye Animation Productions, CBS Television Studios’ new animation arm; Secret Hideout; and Roddenberry Entertainment. Secret Hideout’s Alex Kurtzman and Heather Kadin and Roddenberry Entertainment’s Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth and Katie Krentz will serve as executive producers alongside creator Mike McMahan (Rick and Morty). Aaron Baiers (Secret Hideout), who brought McMahan to the project, will serve as a co-executive producer. The series will air exclusively on CBS All Access in the United States and will be distributed concurrently internationally by CBS Studios International.
