If you love films, proper films, the kind you discover, rediscover, argue about, quote badly and then insist everyone else watches immediately, this is very good news.
STUDIOCANAL has officially launched STUDIOCANAL Classics, a new worldwide catalogue label designed to bring its extraordinary film library to audiences around the globe. We are talking about one of the most impressive catalogues in cinema, with more than 18,000 titles spanning 100 unmissable years of film history. That is not just a vast back catalogue, that is a film lover’s treasure chest. The newly launched site, studiocanalclassics.com, gives audiences a fresh way to engage with the label’s enormous library, from iconic blockbusters and cult favourites to arthouse landmarks, international classics and family favourites. The line-up is genuinely ridiculous in the best possible way: Apocalypse Now, Basic Instinct, Ran, Paddington, Rambo, Terminator 2, Bridget Jones, Escape from New York, La Grande Vadrouille, The Graduate, The Third Man, Billy Liar and many, many more.
This is not just about sticking old films on a shelf and calling it a day either. Over the past seven years, STUDIOCANAL has invested close to 25 million euros into the 4K restoration of nearly 1,000 classic feature films, helping long-time cinephiles and newer film fans experience these titles in the best possible condition. Basically, if your Letterboxd watchlist was already out of control, bad news, it just got even more out of hand.
There is plenty heading back to the big screen too. Terminator 2: Judgment Day returns to cinemas on August 27, which is, pleasingly, Judgment Day itself. Michael Mann’s Manhunter: The Final Cut, fresh from US cinemas, comes to the UK on September 25. Pan’s Labyrinth, a Jacques Tati retrospective and To Be or Not to Be will also return to cinemas this autumn, with the latter screening shortly at the Venice Film Festival. We are being truly spoilt.
Home entertainment fans are being looked after as well, with forthcoming 4K releases including Blood Simple Director’s Cut, Inside Llewyn Davis, Accident, Chaplin, Un Flic and the Jacques Tati retrospective.
The label’s slogan is “Great Films Live Forever”, and honestly, that feels about right. Whether you are into action, horror, comedy, European cinema, restored masterpieces or films you remember seeing on TV at 1am and have been trying to find ever since, STUDIOCANAL Classics looks like one to keep bookmarked.
