Ever since Taika Waititi & Jemaine Clement’s brilliant vampire mockumentary What We Do In The Shadows became an instant cult classic, fans have been ravenous for the promised werewolves centred spin-off, We’re Wolves. Five years on and the project is still ‘in development’, but speaking to IndieWire, Taika Waititi has offered an update.
“We’re Wolves is the film that Jemaine and I keep pretending that we’re making. Every couple of years we say, we’re making this new film called We’re Wolves, which follows the werewolves from the film. I feel bad to even mention it now because we keep saying it, [but] it’s like a dad saying, ‘Yeah, I’ll be home for Christmas.’”
Sadly it seems as though We’re Wolves is no closer to being made than it was five years ago, but given the busy schedules of both Clement & Waititi, it’s not hugely surprising. The Wolfpack led by Rhys Darby’s super polite Anton is ripe for a spin-off, but if it takes the duo another five years to write it, I’m willing to wait.
On the more positive side, the What We Do In The Shadows TV series has been a roaring success with a second season already ordered. The spin-off recently featured the return of the original vampire trio from the film (in addition to a wealth of cameos) confirming the series as a spin-off, not a reboot. In that spirit, perhaps Anton could make an appearance in the second season which lands next year.
Meanwhile, Taika Waititi is back on the big screen later this for an adaptation of Christine Leunens’ book, Jojo Rabbit. Waititi, writes, directs, and co-stars (as Adolf Hitler) alongside Scarlett Johansson, Rebel Wilson, Sam Rockwell, and Stephen Merchant. Jojo Rabbit will be released later this year, What We Do In The Shadows can be seen on Sunday nights on BBC Two with double helpings.
