Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement’s What We Do In The Shadows might just be the greatest vampire mockumentary the world has ever seen. While that might sound like a backhanded compliment as there isn’t an abundance of vampire mockumentaries, What We Do In The Shadows might be one of the greatest horror comedies ever made. Waititi and Clement have already staked their claim on a sequel that would follow Rhys Darby’s band of polite werewolves, and during an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Waititi has provided a brief update.

“We want to do it, and we’re coming up with story ideas. The first film took us about seven years to make, and we don’t want to do that again. It’s a lot easier now that we have all the characters, and we know how we want to do it, and we know that we can do it. The first time we were doing it, we had no idea what we were trying to do, really. It’s not like we were inventing the mockumentary genre, but doing it with special effects, and trying to figure that all out, and make it funny, was a really, really long process.

The same werewolf actors would come back. It would basically be Rhys [Darby] and Stu [Rutherford] vying for position as the alpha male in the werewolf gang.”

What We Do In The Shadows was the culmination of seven years hard work for Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement, in the end the film they made bore little resemblance to the script they had written as most of the dialogue was improvised. That won’t be the case for We’re Wolves as the plan is to shoot the project sometime next year.

In the meantime, Taika Waititi’s new film (Wilderpeople) is due for release this summer and he’s about to start work on Thor: Ragnarok starring Chris Hemsworth, Jeff Goldblum, Cate Blanchett, Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, Karl Urban and Tom Hiddleston.
